7 cybersecurity tips to protect your company

Computer viruses such as  WannaCry, which in 2017 affected companies in more than 100 countries around the world,  have managed to infect the computers and internal networks of SMEs and multinationals.

The need for companies to protect themselves against the millions of  malware that are launched annually in the world is increasing. The digitalization of companies, their purchasing and selling services and other internal processes, favors the growth of these attacks. And not only are they increasing in number, they are also becoming more sophisticated.

Any protection is insufficient after verifying the capacity of these attacks to completely paralyze the activity of a company, attack its assets or blackmail its leaders and employees.

In this article we compile some  aspects that you should take into account when protecting your business  against this type of threats.

7 tips on cybersecurity

Update the software : Although it seems like an obvious measure, these updates are not always carried out as quickly as they should.

Devices beyond the PC : We are talking, for example, about external memories (USB) or company mobile terminals. Everyday gestures such as connecting to an external network or sharing files through platforms such as WhatsApp can cause problems.

Be careful with downloads : Email is the main entry point for viruses. It is important not to use personal email in the office and check the veracity of emails that include attachments or links.

Password and permission management : Administrator permissions should be the exception, not the norm. Access to certain documents, programs, folders and websites should also be restricted. Regarding passwords, it is important that they are secure (acceptable length and mix of special and alphanumeric characters). It is also advisable to modify them periodically (every three months).

Backups:  A proactive measure that can save us more than one disappointment if an incident occurs. Information must be saved and encrypted to avoid data loss.

Manage security incidents quickly : It is important to inform the technical team of any incident or problem that is detected, so that it can be resolved as soon as possible and prevent it from escalating. A good job of raising employee awareness regarding computer security should be a priority in small business.

Invest in qualified personnel:  Having a specialized and competent team can make a huge difference in the event of a crisis.

Train your teams: Most attacks happen due to failures in attempts. By training the people in our organization, we will reduce the chances that cyber threats will materialize.
